General Instructions
The South Carolina Department of Revenue requires that you file for an extension whether or not you owe additional taxes at this time. However, if you do not owe any additional taxes the state will accept the Federal extension in lieu of a South Carolina extension.
South Carolina automatically grants a four month extension of time to file until August 15, 2008. To avoid penalties, South Carolina requires that at least 90% of your total tax liability (or 100% of your 2006 tax liability) by April 15, 2008 and the balance with the filing of your return.
Note: If your Adjusted Gross Income exceeded $150,000 in 2006, you must pay 90% of your 2007 tax liability or 110% of your 2006 tax liability to avoid a penalty.
Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:
In all cases, interest will be charged from the date the tax should have been paid (April 15, 2008) until the date of payment. Any unpaid portion of the final due will incur interest at the prevailing federal rates. In addition, the state may assess the following penalties:

If you owe additional South Carolina Income Taxes you may pay your estimated balance due in the following ways:
Pay with check or money order:The South Carolina Department of Revenue operates an online system for submitting a request for an extension. You can find this system at SCnetFile
Using SCnetFile you can pay by credit card (MasterCard or Visa Only) or by Direct Debit (electronic check) directly from your bank account. There are no additional charges for using this service.
Pay by Credit Card:South Carolina accepts payment by credit card through Official Payments Corporation. Making your payment in this way automatically qualifies you for an extension of time to file your tax return until August 15, 2008. You will not need to file any other forms at this time. You can do this either on the web or by telephone.
Official Payments Corporation will accept Discover/NOVUS, MasterCard, Visa or American Express card to pay your personal income taxes. There is a convenience fee for this service equal to 2.5% of the tax amount being charged. The minimum fee is $1.00.

If You Do Not Owe...
South Carolina requires that you request an extension, even if you do not owe or are expecting a tax refund.
If You Are Filing for a Federal Extension:There is nothing to be filed at this time. Be sure to attach a copy of your completed Federal Extension form to your South Carolina return when you file.
If You Are NOT Filing for a Federal Extension:You have two options for submitting your request for an extension of time to file: online at SCnetFile or by mail.
