General Instructions

The South Carolina Department of Revenue will grant an automatic six-month extension of time to file until Oct 15, 2014 by filing SC4868 on or before April 15, 2014.

South Carolina will also accept a federal extension of time to file if no South Carolina income tax is anticipated to be due on your return. In this case, you do not need to send SC a copy of the federal form by the due date. Check the box on the front of the SC1040 if you have filed an extension and attach a copy of the federal extension to your return when filed.

To avoid penalties, South Carolina requires that at least 90% of your total tax liability (or 100% of your 2012 tax liability) by April 15, 2014 and the balance with the filing of your return. An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes, and avoids a late filing penalty.

If You Owe

If you owe additional state income tax, you are required to file Form SC4868 and attach payment of taxes you estimate you owe by April 15, 2014. To avoid penalties, South Carolina requires that 90% of the total tax liability be paid by April 15, 2014. Note: If your Adjusted Gross Income exceeded $150,000 in 2012, you must pay 90% of your 2013 tax liability or 110% of your 2012 tax liability to avoid a penalty. Remember, an extension only allows you additional time to file your return. Your tax must still be paid to avoid penalty and interest.
