General Instructions

If you meet all the following tests, the Rhode Island extension form need not be filed.

  1. You are not required to make payment with Rhode Island extension form; and
  2. You file a proper Federal extension form; and
  3. Your request for extension covers the same time period for both Rhode Island and Federal purposes.

If you meet the criteria above, there is nothing to be filed at this time. You must attach a copy of Federal Form 4868 or the electronic acknowledgement you receive from the IRS to the front of the Rhode Island return when it is filed.

Rhode Island automatically grants a six month extension of time to file until October 15, 2008.

Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:

In all cases, interest at an annual rate of 18% will be charged from the date the tax should have been paid (April 15, 2008) until the date of payment. In addition, the state may assess the following penalties:

  • Late Payment Penalty. Rhode Island may assess a late payment penalty if you do not pay total tax due with the filing of your return.
  • Failure to File Penalty. If you do not file your return by October 15, 2008, you may be assessed an additional penalty.

If You Owe...

If you owe additional Rhode Island Income Taxes you may pay your estimated balance due in the following ways:

Pay with check or money order:
  1. Prepare a Rhode Island Extension Form RI-4868 (click here to download PDF)
  2. Enclose a check or money order along with the completed form.
  3. Mail to:

    Division of Taxation

    Providence, RI 02908-5806

Pay by Credit Card:

Rhode Island accepts payment by credit card through Official Payments Corporation. Making your payment in this way automatically qualifies you for an extension of time to file your tax return until October 15, 2008. You will not need to file any other forms at this time. You can do this either on the web or by telephone.

Official Payments Corporation will accept Discover/NOVUS, MasterCard, Visa or American Express card to pay your personal income taxes. There is a convenience fee for this service equal to 2.49% of the tax amount being charged. The minimum fee is $1.00.

To make your payment and receive an automatic extension of time to file, have the following information ready:

  • The amount you are paying in dollars and cents
  • Your social security number
  • Your spouse's social security number (if applicable)
  • The first four letters of your last name
  • The first four letters of your spouse's last name, if different from yours
  • Tax year 2007
  • Your home telephone number (including area code)
  • Credit card number
  • Credit card expiration date (MM/YYYY)
  • ZIP Code for the address where your credit card bills are sent

By Telephone:

Use your touch-tone phone to call toll-free (800) 272-9829. At the end of your call you will be given a confirmation number. Write down and save this confirmation number for your records


If You Do Not Owe...

Rhode Island requires that you request an extension, even if you do not owe or are expecting a tax refund.

If you are filing for a Federal Extension
