New Mexico

General Instructions

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file until October 15, 2014 if you are filing for a federal extension. Simply check the box on your completed New Mexico PIT-1 indicating that you filed for an automatic extension with the IRS.

You are only required to file for a New Mexico State extension, if you are not applying for a federal extension. Without a federal extension, New Mexico generally grants a 60-day extension of time to file.

To request an extension of time from New Mexico:

  1. Prepare a New Mexico Extension RPD-41096
  2. Do NOT enclose a payment with your extension.
  3. Mail to:
    Taxation and Revenue Department
    PO Box 630
    Santa Fe , NM 87504-0630

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

If You Owe

To avoid interest and penalties you must pay your current year tax liability in full by April 15, 2014 and submit your New Mexico return by October 15, 2014.
