General Instructions

Generally, the Massachusetts Department of Revenue requires taxpayers to submit an application for automatic six-month extension of time to file a state income tax return if the final return cannot be submitted by the normal filing deadline. The Department of Revenue provides a free online service to submit the extension application at the WebFile for Income Online Services.

However, if the taxpayer is expecting a refund and knows that there will be no balance due when the final tax return is filed by October 15, no application for automatic extension is necessary.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

If You Owe

To avoid and penalties and interest, you must pay at least 80% of the tax on or before the due date of the return. Filing for an extension does not extend the time to pay your taxes. Any tax not paid by the original due date of the Massachusetts return will be assessed interest from the due date to the payment date. There are additional penalties for late payment of taxes or for filing your tax return late.

Find out if you owe by completing the worksheet on Form M-4868.

Pay Online

Pay your taxes online at Official Payments Corporation. Visa, MasterCard, Discover Network, and American Express credit and debit cards, and other forms of payment, such as Bill Me Later® are accepted. To make a debit card payment you can use a MasterCard or Visa Debit Card or any debit card with Nyce, Pulse or Star logos.

There is a convenience fee for this service which is paid directly to the company. The amount of the fee is based on the amount of your payment.

Pay by Phone

Pay your taxes by phone by calling Official Payments toll-free at 1-800-272-9829. This automated service is available 24 hours, 7 days a week. At the end of your call you will be given a confirmation number. Save this as proof of payment for your records.

Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed

Returns not filed on or before the due date are subject to a late file penalty of 1% per month of the tax due, up to a maximum of 25%. Interest will also be charged on any tax not paid on or before the original due date.
