Kansas Kansas Payment Voucher 40V

Tax Year 2009

General Instructions

The Kansas Department of Revenue does not require you to file a request for additional time. Kansas grants an automatic extension until October 15, 2010 to file your 2009 tax return. However, to avoid penalties and interest, you must pay your 90% of your current year tax liability, or 100% of your 2008 tax liability by April 15, 2010.

If you file Form 4868 requesting an automatic 4 month extension of time when filing your Federal tax return, Kansas will automatically grant you a 4 month extension of time to file your Kansas return. A copy of form 4868 must be included with your Kansas income tax return when filed.

Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:

Those who do not pay at least 90% of the amount due on or before April 15, 2010 will be charged interest on the unpaid balance. There are exceptions:

  • The amount of tax paid on or before April 15, 2010 is greater than, or equal to 100% of the total tax liability on your prior year return.
  • If 90% of tax liability is paid on or before April 15, 2010, no penalty is assessed. Those who do not file for an extension, or file late are also charged a substantial late filing penalty.
  • Late Payment and Late Filing Penalty: A penalty of 1% of the unpaid balance, for each month (or portion thereof) from April 15, 2010 until the return is filed. The maximum penalty is 24%.
  • Interest on the unpaid balance is computed at 0.417% per month or portion thereof from April 15, 2010.
