General Instructions

The Kansas Department of Revenue does not have an extension request form; however, you may be granted an extension of time to file if you are unable to complete your Kansas return by the filing deadline. If you file for a federal extension requesting an automatic six-month extension of time to file your federal tax return, Kansas will automatically grant you a six-month extension of time to file your Kansas return. A copy of form 4868 must be included with your Kansas income tax return when filed.

To pay the tax balance due for an extension, use the Kansas Payment Voucher (K-40V). Check the box on the K-40V indicating extension payment. If you do not pay the tax due (may be estimated) by the original due date, you will owe interest and penalty on any balance due.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

If You Owe

To avoid penalties and interest, you must pay your 90% of your current year tax liability, or 100% of your 2013 tax liability by April 15, 2014. If you are not able to pay the full amount due, you should file your Kansas income tax return and pay as much as you can by the filing date. Penalties and interest will accrue on any unpaid balance until fully paid. To pay the tax balance due for an extension, use the Kansas Payment Voucher (K-40V). Check the box on the K-40V indicating extension payment. If you do not pay the tax due (may be estimated) by the original due date, you will owe interest and penalty on any balance due.
