General Instructions

The Idaho State Tax Commission may grant you an automatic six-month extension if you cannot file your Idaho individual income taxes by April 15, 2014. To qualify, you need to pay either an estimated 80% of the tax you owe for the current tax year or 100% of what you paid for state income taxes the prior year by April 15, 2014.

To see if you meet the extension requirements, complete the worksheet on Idaho Form 51 and calculate the 80%.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes. To avoid an extension underpayment penalty you must pay at least 80% of the tax due by April 15, 2014.

If You Owe

If you owe taxes, payment must be made by April 15, 2014 or penalty and interest will be assessed. If you cannot meet the filing deadline, you should apply for an extension. The extension allows additional time to complete and file your income tax return; however, the extension does not provide additional time to pay the amount of tax owed.

To avoid penalties, you must pay 80% of your current yearís income tax liability or 100% of the income tax reported on your income tax return for the preceding year, if one was filed, by April 15, 2014. If you will owe $50 or less, a payment isnít required in order to have a valid extension of time to file your return. However, interest will be charged.

If You Do Not Owe

Thereís a three-year-expiration date for claiming a refund, beginning on the original due date of your income tax return. The "original due date" is the April 15 following the tax year (except when it falls on a weekend or holiday). Extensions of time to file donít change the original due date for the three-year refund claim period; after that time, a refund wonít be issued.
