General Instructions

The Alabama Department of Revenue applies the automatic six-month extension rule for filing your state income tax return. It is only required that you submit Payment Voucher 40V if you owe Alabama taxes. If you are expecting a refund from Alabama there is nothing to be filed, an extension is automatically granted until October 15, 2014 for the filing of your 2013 tax return.

You are automatically allowed an extension of up to six months to file your tax return without filing an extension form. An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

If You Owe

If you owe taxes, payment must be made by April 15, 2014 or penalty and interest will be assessed. Submit your payment with the payment voucher (Form 40V) with the box “Automatic Extension Payment” checked by April 15. The extension allows additional time to complete and file your income tax return; however, the extension does not provide additional time to pay the amount of tax owed.

Pay Online

You may pay by ACH Debit by going to the Alabama Department of Revenue Paperless Filing and Payment System. Do not use Form 40V when paying by ACH Debit. You will need to have your bank routing number and checking account to use this service. No fee is charged for this service.

Pay by Mail

Along with Form 40V, send a check or money order in the amount of the estimated tax due made payable to Alabama Department of Revenue. Write your Social Security number on the front of your payment. Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:

If you have an approved extension, you will not be charged a delinquent penalty. Other penalties such as fraud penalty (maximum 50%), non-payment penalty (1% per month), estimate penalty (10% maximum), or underestimation penalty (6% maximum) will be charged, if applicable, even if you have an approved extension.

Interest is charged from the regular due date of the return until the tax is paid. It will be charged even if you have an extension or you show reasonable cause for not paying the tax on time. Alabama law provides that interest be collected at the same rate prescribed by the Internal Revenue Service.

If You Do Not Owe

The Alabama Department of Revenue only requires that you file for an extension if you owe Alabama taxes. If you are expecting a refund from Alabama there is nothing to be filed, an extension is automatically granted until October 15, 2014 for the filing of your 2013 tax return.
