| Alabama | Allow payments for tax year 2008 |
General Instructions
The Alabama Department of Revenue no longer requires a separate extension and will automatically grant a six month extension until October 15, 2009 to file your 2008 tax return.
To avoid penalties and interest, the balance due on an Alabama return must be paid by April 15, 2009. Filing for an extension does not extend the time to pay your taxes. A late payment penalty and interest may still apply if your tax liability is not paid on or before April 15th.
Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed:
- If you have an approved extension, you will not be charged a delinquent penalty. Other penalties such as fraud penalty (maximum 50%), non-payment penalty (1% per month), estimate penalty (10% maximum), or underestimation penalty (6% maximum) will be charged, if applicable, even if you have an approved extension.
- Interest is charged from the regular due date of the return until the tax is paid. It will be charged even if you have an extension or you show reasonable cause for not paying the tax on time. Alabama law provides that interest be collected at the same rate prescribed by the Internal Revenue Service.
